HUNDREDS OF MAINFRAME USERS GATHER TO HEAR BUSINESS AND LEGAL FACTS ABOUT NEON zPRIME™
NEON CEO emphasizes need for competition in the mainframe market with viable products such as zPrime™

SUGAR LAND, TX. – October 1, 2009 – A recent NEON Enterprise Software Webinar on NEON zPrime convinced IT organizations at many of the largest corporations in the world they have every right to use competitive mainframe technology that can save their corporations and shareholders millions of dollars in IT costs.

The Webinar, conducted by NEON CEO Lacy H. Edwards, delivered highly-sought answers to a number of questions mainframe users were posing about NEON zPrime. The event resulted in many corporations moving forward with testing or implementation of zPrime.

"Disruptive products such as zPrime inevitably cause new challenges and some confusion," Edwards said. "We want to make sure mainframe users have all the facts they need to make an informed business decision, and understand the choice they have to reduce their mainframe costs. We asked them to provide us their most pressing questions involving zPrime, and performed the due diligence necessary to be sure we answered them thoroughly and factually."

More than 400 people registered for the September 23 Webinar, which is now available for review on the NEON corporate website. Attendees that represented nearly 200 companies and organizations listened to Edwards clarify how zPrime affords IT executives more control over their IT investments with the potential to substantially reduce mainframe costs. Edwards was joined online by software forensics expert Stephen Heffner, President of Pennington Systems, and Wayne Webb, a registered patent and intellectual property attorney with the Bracewell & Giuliani, LLP law firm.

NEON derived the questions answered on the Webinar from the several hundred mainframe users that registered for the event. The most common and relevant questions were chosen, and primarily involved legal and business viability of zPrime relative to IBM contracts, licensing, and impacts on existing hardware and software.

Some of the main points NEON conveyed on the Webinar included:

  • zPrime is legal to use, free of any intellectual property infringements, and based on customers' legal reviews, has not jeopardized any standard contracts customers have with IBM;
  • zPrime does not interfere with, or have any adverse impact upon existing mainframe software or hardware;
  • If a zPrime user ever loses the primary zPrime benefit of saving money, they have the option of cancelling the contract and receiving a pro-rated refund from NEON for any unused license fees;
  • NEON’s standard license agreement indemnifies customers against third party intellectual property based claims, assuming that zPrime is used in unmodified form and in accordance with the product specifications. The NEON standard license agreement also includes a warranty of non-infringement of third party intellectual property rights.
zPrime facilitates shifts of mainstream processing workloads on IBM System z mainframes (CICS, IMS, DB2, TSO and batch) from central processors to IBM specialty processors known as zIIPs (z Integrated Information Processors) and zAAPs (z Application Assist Processors). Most mainstream business applications rely on mainframe software that is priced according to how much a System z central processor is used. Significant shifts of core business application workloads to zIIPs and zAAPs, which don’t involve MIPS-based pricing, can result in millions of dollars of cost savings.

"zPrime is really all about giving mainframe users a choice," Edwards said. "This isn't something they are used to having. But choice is what let's customers make responsible decisions for their business—ones that lead to financial and competitive gain."
